This process will run you through the general process for applying (puts you into the Smithsonian pool) and applying for the Manastash Internship (one CWU student is guaranteed this). DEADLINE IS 15 FEBRUARY, 2026.
More about the Manastash Internship. Note, this is only available to CWU undergraduate and graduate students majoring in geology, biology, ENST, chemistry, and physics. Yes, you are eligible if you are graduating this spring.
A little about the internships. They’re all paid ($7k plus $1k for travel – unless otherwise noted). Most are in DC, though there are a few exceptions. 10 weeks during the summer. The Smithsonian has an office that can advise on housing opportunities, etc.
OK. This is our first year doing this, so there may be some glitches.
First, general info about internships from the Smithsonian. And a FAQ.
Next, goto this page and look for internships that sound interesting. Be sure to check out the opportunities at the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of Natural History, National Zoo, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Smithsonian Gardens, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. If you are also interested in, generally speaking, science education/communication, there are many more options in there.
Choose one. Note, you can apply for more, but you have to do the full process each time.
Now, head to this page. Here you will create an account, log in, and start your application for the internship you chose.
Each internship has different requirements, so follow those. But generally, you will need:
- A brief essay that addresses the following”
- Your past and present academic history and other experiences which you feel have prepared you for an internship
- What you hope to learn through an internship, and how it would relate to your academic and career goals
- What about the Smithsonian in particular interests you and leads you to apply for an internship, including interest or experiences in museums, galleries, libraries, or archives
- Transcripts (or other materials when transcripts are not issued) from all appropriate institutions are required. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. If transcripts or other materials are not in English, the applicant should provide translations.
- A copy of your resume. Limit this to 2 pages and be sure to include your education, any volunteer experience, skills and accomplishments, and hobbies that you enjoy
- References – name and contact info for two academic references. Note, the Smithsonian system will automatically contact these folks and ask for letters.
Once you have completed and submitted the Smithsonian application, email Bob Hickey (the guy who put together the Manastash Internship) and let him know you applied. Send to onlinegeographer@gmail.com
The online process gets you into the Smithsonian’s system and makes you eligible for the internship regardless of whether or not you get the Manastash Internship. Emailing Bob puts you in the Manastash pool.
Note – The Manastash Internship winner will be required to give a presentation on their experience in the fall.
If anyone has questions, I’ll do my best to answer them. Email me at onlinegeographer@gmail.com
Best of luck! Let’s get some smart CWU students into the Smithsonian!
